$220 Million Expansion
This project, totaling $220 million, marks the second phase of St. Joseph's master plan to expand its urban site. During phase one, the hospital health center invested $45 million of its own resources to make improvements such as a new lobby. While this project is financially ambitious, there is no way to quantify what it will mean to our patients and community once completed.
Improvements outlined in the plan include the following:
Emergency Services Building
Emergency Department
The current 44-bed Emergency Department will be replaced with a 44,000 square-foot Emergency Services Building. This new construction will house an expanded 54-bed Emergency Department and a 15-bed Clinical Observation Unit with a five-bed Chest Pain Center.
The new size will allow the Emergency Department to accommodate growing patient volumes. The Clinical Observation Unit, utilizing a relatively new and effective strategy, will enhance ED efficiency and reduce average length of stay by up to 30 percent. This will result in drastically reduced patient wait times and increased quality of care.
Emergency Psychiatric Program
The Emergency Psychiatric Program will be relocated above the Emergency Department and expanded from 6,500 square feet to approximately 17,000 square feet. This will allow for the proper treatment and isolation of patients with varying degrees of illness. With more capabilities and new proximity to the ED, wait and treatment times will see dramatic decreases.
Private Patient Rooms
A 104,000 square-foot patient tower will be built with 110 private patient rooms, allowing patients to recover surrounded only by their own family and friends. Private rooms have been shown to help facilitate faster, healthier recoveries. This setup will also help reduce the spread of disease and infection amongst patients.
Operating Room Suites
St. Joseph's existing 12-OR Suite will be replaced with 48,000 square-foot, 14-OR new construction, including a 25-bed post-anesthesia care unit. This will allow patients to prepare for, receive and recover from surgery with minimal transport or interruption.
Intensive Care Unit
A larger, 38-bed Intensive Care Unit will be newly constructed to help St. Joseph's improve care and give the necessary attention to those who need it most.
Data Center
The expansion will include a new green data center equipped to provide for faster recovery and business continuity in the event of a disaster. It will also help St. Joseph's run smoothly in the face of growth in size and patient volumes.
