Daylighting

St. Joseph's expansion will incorporate lots of daylight into the building design. Not only does this save energy but it also contributes to the healing process.

Research shows that healthcare workers are more productive and make fewer mistakes when they work in hospitals that have a lot of daylight coming into the units. In addition, patients get better more quickly, which shortens hospital stays.

It's estimated that 31 percent of all electricity used in commercial buildings is for lighting. By incorporating more daylight in St. Joseph's new construction, lighting energy use can be reduced by up to 60 percent, according to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
