Green Data Center

The United States Department of Energy estimates that data centers in our country consumed 61 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2006. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority estimates that $593 million is spent annually on energy for data centers in New York State alone.

St. Joseph's plans to create a "green" data center by incorporating scalable modular design with in-row cooling and power distribution ro reduce its energy consumption by 60 percent. In addition, it plans to use server virtualization and storage consolidation technologies to reduce energy consumption by 65 percent.

Estimated to cost about $3.7 million, the data center will save $44,000 on electricity costs each year, along with 300 metric tons of CO2.
