St. Joseph's Capital Campaign Halfway to Goal of $30 Million

Jan 4. 12

St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center’s Generations Capital Campaign is halfway to its goal of raising $30 million in support of a major expansion project on the hospital campus. The $2.5 million in grant funding from New York State through the Empire State Development Corporation helped propel the campaign to more than $15 million. In addition, the campaign recently secured the largest single contribution from an individual/family, Sam and Carol Nappi, in St. Joseph’s history.

“We are so grateful to all of our donors for all they have given to support our new expansion,” said Margaret Martin, vice president for marketing, communications and development for St. Joseph’s. “Without the support of so many we would be unable to make these investments toward quality healthcare for our community.”

The Generations Campaign is raising money for St. Joseph’s new emergency services building and patient tower. The emergency services building, Phase 2A, includes a new and expanded emergency department, psychiatric emergency program and a “green” data center. It is scheduled to open in early February, 2012.

Phase 2B includes a 104,000 sq ft patient tower with 110 private patient rooms including medical and surgical intensive care units, a 73,000 sq ft state-of-the-art surgical suite with 14 operating rooms, a 25-bed post-anesthesia care unit and a greenway corridor to North side businesses. The tower will also contain space for support services, staff education and family waiting areas.

Private patient rooms allow patients to recuperate surrounded by only their own family and friends – an environment shown to help facilitate faster, healthier recoveries. Private rooms also help reduce the spread of disease and infection.

Consistent with Syracuse’s national identity as one of the top 10 green communities in the nation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the entire expansion project will use sustainable design principles to build a “healthy” hospital while seeking LEED certification. Estimated to cost $140 million, Phase 2B is expected to be complete in 2014.
